GameSpot report that in the December issue of Game Informer magazine, Bungie reveal details of Halo 3’s spin-off, Recon, as part of a 10-page spread.
Bungie design lead Joe Bertone says the game is “a three to five-hour expansion pack,” with cinematic director Joe Staten saying “we do not view this as a $60 title.” The article also claims that the limited-release Recon Armor will also be available to anyone who completes the Vidmaster Challenge achievement series.
Recon will be told in the form of a prologue through the eyes of a UNSC shock trooper behind enemy lines. At E3 2008 it was said that the game will be a “less cartoony” and “more bloody, violent, and grim” tale of a battle between UNSC forces and the pan-racial religious empire known as the Covenant.
Halo 3: Recon is expected to get a Autumn 2009 release on Xbox 360.

I wasn’t aware halo was cartoony, I always felt it was a mature game that just wasnt that violent. In america the games are the equivelant of our 18+ anyway.
My prognosis… bungie dont know what they’re talking about, which fits with every other thing i’ve ever said against them.

There is bugger-all mature about Halo. It’s daft sci-fi with silly, brightly-coloured aliens and a generic ’save the universe’ plot.
Doesn’t make it a bad game, like. But it *is* cartoony.
As for the notion that Bungie don’t know what they’re talking about… yeah, nice one. Really.

When bungie stop releasing buggy messes of games, with horrible looking graphics, dull as wallpaper cut and paste level design, cringe worthy dialogue and the overall godlike superiority complex they excert over the halo community, ill take back any offensive comments I’ve ever made against them.
I remember when they hailed Halo 3 to have an amazing secret button that would change the way we played FPS’s forever and kept everyone in the dark for ages… the button ended up being that to deploy shields, power drainers ectra… hardly innovative.

I enjoyed the first Halo, largely didn’t get into the second, but Halo 3 is really good. Certainly not buggy and the graphics are fine. The multiplayer mode is probably some of the best FPS since GoldenEye, as it’s possible to have the same small scale duals between 2-4 players. The pace is just right and not too fast like most PC FPS. I’ve criticised the series in the past, mostly for lack of creative ambition, but from a gameplay perspective it’s far better than most. Really the genre hasn’t seen the kind of progress I expected after playing GoldenEye.
Recon is still something I’m looking forward to, but it’s a shame Bungie aren’t doing something more original with their superb game engine. I’m totally bored of the Covenant/Flood background and would like to see a more innovative Sci-fi story.

The Halo 3 campaign was one of the most underwhelming games I have played in the past few years. Not buggy, but uninspired. Nothing special at all. The story and characters do not interest me in any way. They arent offensively bad like Gears of War, just boring.
The multiplayer is very well done, even if Bungie do make some strange decisions sometimes.

Not buggy…
Points at rolling rats, unpolished textures, enemies who get stuck behind nothing… enemies that get stuck behind something… ectra.

You leave Rolland Rat out of this!
I agree with Seth, First game was genius… second game was too much hype and very little pay off, the third wizzed by me without making even a dint in my memory, i mean seriously…. when all the trailers showed clips of earth being raped, and suggested there was a war you were going to be fighting on the front lines. Why did we all spend several hours repeating the same fucking levels and scenarios?
I hope recon will be the game i wanted Halo 3 to be. Fighting the covenant up close and personal, winning actual large scale infantry battles and pushing their forces back off a war torn earth.
But no doubt it will be another superman, taking on all of earths troubles by fighting his way to the bottom of a poorly protected base, and flicking an ANCIENT TECHNOLOGY SWITCH….. ALL BETTER! xxx
Who knows, if we are lucky we might get to do something that influenced slightly what the Chief did in the other games….EXCI…ted…..t….. hnnngh :S
