Codemasters’ last No.1 hit was four years ago with Brian Lara International Cricket 2005, but a strong marketing campaign has ensured that Ashes Cricket 2009 outsell it by almost 3 to 1 in their respective debut weeks.
It’s far and away the biggest launch for a cricket title with release week sales almost matching those of EA’s recent chart-topping boxing game Fight Night Round 4.
Sales of Wii Sports Resort are down 49%, but it’s still well ahead of the rest of the Top 10 at No.2. In fact, the whole top 5 this week is made up of sports/fitness titles. Strong pricing cuts of Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood help it to move up three places to No.7.
Film tie-in G-Force makes the most of the Disney movie being released in cinemas, flying up 14 places and breaking into the top 10 at No.9. In contrast, the biggest loser is UFC 2009: Undisputed which fell 12 places down to No.20.
