The Pope… Passes Away At 84

The Pope John Paul II, has passed away. Being one of the longest serving Pontiffs ever… He served a faithful 27 years, during which time he has been shot in the hand and abdomen and even visited his would ‘be’ assassin in prison (He is due to be released within 2 years).

Born Karol Wojtyla, to a poor Polish family, he became Pope in 1978 before taking a stand on many issues such as contraception and abortion.

He was the most widely travelled pontiff and visited more than 120 countries during his 26-year papacy. It nearly ended in 1981 when he was shot and seriously wounded as he toured St Peter’s Square in Rome.

After a long period of recovery he visited and forgave the would-be assassin.

John Paul’s reign saw radical changes in the world including the collapse of communism and the spread of Aids.

Although plagued by ill health throughout the latter part of his papacy he maintained his international schedule and in 2000 made a poignant pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

He also made a final, nostalgic return to his homeland in 2002.

The Pope was a great and wonderful advocate of Catholicism, although not a follower of this faith I can say what this great man did for his religion was admirable.
And that although his life ends at this stage that it is not the end, Death is the end of one journey and the beginning of a new adventure… God Bless his soul.
