PS3 Games Top Charts, Console Sets Records

If you believe the opinion of people interweb then the PS3 launch did not go too well but now with official numbers and charts being released it would seem Sony had a much better launch with their next gen console than most people thought.

Firstly Chart-Track have just released their weekly UK charts and the two big PS3 exclusives at launch – Insomniac’s Resistance: Fall of Man and Evolution Studios’ MotorStorm – have taken the number one and two positions respectively. Codemaster’s Brian Lara International Cricket 2007 took number three thanks to the World Cup going on at the moment… but that’s got nothing to do with PS3 so we move quickly onto the multiformat Virtua Tennis 3 which took the number four position in the charts. Activision’s Call of Duty 3 – also a multiformat game – shot back up the charts to number five. The next PS3 exclusive was Formula 1: Championship Edition which reached number seven. The rest of the PS3 games on show were Ridge Racer 7 at number 11, SEGA’s Virtua Fighter 5 at number 14 and Genji: Days of the Blade at 16.

The console itself also sold very well with an official 165,000 PlayStation 3 units being sold in the UK in the first two days after the unit went on sale. That number makes PS3 the fastest-selling home console in history, beating the Wii – with 105,000 units during its launch weekend – and Xbox 360, with 70,000 sold. Maybe Sony were right to halt the release those extra four months… it seems they definitely were able to meet the demand and were able to provide a console to all gamers that could afford one.
