PS3 Firmware 1.9 Coming Tomorrow

The kind folks at Sony have today revealed that PS3 firmware version 1.90 will be released across Europe tomorrow (Tuesday 24th). It seems that while the jump to 1.90 will not be as loaded as previous updates it will still have a fair few features included to amuse. Without doubt the biggest change will be customisable backgrounds for the dashboard (or XMB). Other small changes will see the addition of emoticons for text chat (*.*)/

Less noticeable updates will see some change to how the unit plays CD’s, supposedly to get a batter output. Blu-ray HDMI output has also got a rejiggle, as has backwards compatibility upscaling. Prize for the most useless update will most likely go to a new option that will let you eject a disc with your Sixaxis, unfortunately no ‘put disc back in box’ option has been added yet so you still need to strain yourself and walk those few feet over to the unit to finish the job.

Thankfully the multitalented, and apparently multilingual people over at Kotaku have translated the bullet points from a Japanese listing, they are:

• Ability to rearrange games on the XMB
• Option menu now includes “eject disk”
• Press triangle to eject games/CDs/movies in the XMB
• XMB backgrounds
• Change the folder classification
• Emoticons
• Change CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz
• Force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI
• Change PS3 video settings in-game
• “Bit Mapping” in the “Music Setting”
• Save AVCHD type animations from a Memory Stick
• Change settings like upscaling while playing PS and PS2 games
• Add bookmarks
• Web browser security function in the browser’s tool section
• Avatar moves during audio visual chat
