New Street Fighter doing terrible at US Box Office

Variety report that Street Fighter: the Legend of Chun-Li, the new movie based on the Street Fighter franchise, has had a very bad opening at the US box office. In fact, terrible would be a better word. Opening in just 1,136 theatres in the country, the film has an estimated weekend gross of $4.65 million and per screen average of just $4,093.

For comparisons sakes, the 1994 version, starting Jean Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, came in at $6.6 million during the same timeframe.

The movie still has a chance to succeed though, particularly in Asia, over here in Europe, and when it gets released on DVD.

Variety also link to a rather nice chart of the best and worst prefomring game to movie adaptations, which reminds us that DOA: Dead or Alive was truly terrible.
