Midway Hope Stranglehold Is A Top Seller

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Midway’s European MD Martin Spiess has stated the obvious by saying that after investing $30 million in the upcoming action game Stranglehold he hopes the new IP could be one of the biggest sellers this Christmas

“[The game cost us] around USD 30 million, so it’s possibly the most expensive next-generation game in development to date,” said Spiess. “The early indications from retail and the consumers are there, so it is going to pay off.

In order to recoup development money you obviously have to sell a lot of units, but what we’re seeing to date is that we will sell those units. Stranglehold will be the top selling title this Christmas,” he claimed. “From a playability standpoint and a technology standpoint, we’re delivering something which has not been done before – true next-gen for the first time, rather than just having some PC game ported onto next-gen with higher resolution graphics“.

Stranglehold is a third-person shooter, and Midways first attempt at using Unreal Engine 3. The game is being developed in collaboration with John Woo, with the action set in Hong Kong and Chicago. Chow Yun-Fat plays the role of Inspector “Tequila” Yuen, a reprisal of his role in John Woo’s 1992 action movie Hard Boiled. A demo should hit the Live Marketplace very soon, if you are still unsure of the games quality.
