GTA DLC delayed, Take-Two reports massive profits

Buried in the midst of Take-Two Interactive’s latest financial report was the news that the highly-anticipated downloadable content for Rockstar North’s blockbuster title has been delayed to Q1 of fiscal 2009.

For those who use the real calendar instead of the financial one, this means that we can expect to see the further adventures of everyone’s favourite Eastern European sometime between 1st November 2008 and 31st January 2009.

According to Take-Two this decision was not made for any technical or development issues, but merely “to provide a better balance in Take-Two’s release schedule”. The only DLC mentioned was “the first instalment of episodic content for GTAIV for the XBOX 360”. No mention of any future PS3 DLC yet…

The financial report also mentioned that GTAIV surpassed all-time entertainment records for day one and week one sales, with approximately 6 million units sold through globally in the first week at an estimated retail value of more than $500 million. As of May 31, 2008, over 11 million units have been sold in to retailers and approximately 8.5 million units have been sold through to consumers.

The report also provided some Bioshock titbits, revealing that over 2.2 million copies of the game have been shipped since its August release. They also re-confirmed that Bioshock would be coming to PS3 later this year, and (oh dear) that Universal Pictures is developing a feature film based on BioShock to be directed by Gore Verbinski, director of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

The company’s total net revenue for that quarter was an astounding $539.8 million (£275.8 million). Surprisingly the majority of this business was not generated by the phenomenal ‘Dora the Explorer: Dora Save the Mermaids’, but rather by the huge first day sales of Grand Theft Auto IV.

We’re sure that extra development time that Rockstar now has for the GTA DLC won’t hurt though, but it does mean that anticipation and hype will be even higher for the extra content by the time it’s available for download on Xbox Live.
