Dem Oh! Round Up Feature Art

Dem-OH! August Round-up

It has been a relatively quiet month for demos – both playing them and new demo output. But I have to say I enjoyed my short vacation in the sun and look forward to a couple more time-outs in September and October. It has been a heck of a year but as we wind down into the drowsy Autumn months, I encourage all of you to try something a little different these long cool nights. And if you’re looking to expand your horizons in the world of video games, we may just have the right few cozy games for you to look forward to curling up with this spooky season.

Stand-Out Demos

(in recording order)

Supraland Six Inches Under Demo on Steam

Why isn’t Supraland talked about? Like, ever?! I never see it on Top 10 lists (not even Top 10 unknown games, etc) but it’s so damn fun! First-person 3D puzzle platformer’s aren’t exactly common but even if they were, these titles would stand head and shoulders above the competition. The original made it onto my GOTY 2019 and Six Inches Under, which is described as Supraland 1.5 due to the power-up similarities and story parallels, is absolutely a contender for my list this year. Full of wonderfully terrible humour, constant rewarding power-ups, more secrets than you can shake a shovel at, and some of the best puzzle design you’re likely to come across. The Supraland series deserves to be celebrated. So why not be the first of your friends to take it for a spin, so you can personally start the inevitable chain of recommendations and earn all that second-hand glory for yourself.

‘Spectral Mall’ Haunted PS1 Demo Disc 2022

The Haunted PS1 demo disc 2021 got me into playing horror games. I’m honestly not joking. Before I started streaming demoplaythroughs in earlier 2021 I just couldn’t handle them. Like many people they just stressed me out too much. But, by sort of dipping my toe into the genre via a handful of unique short horror ‘experiences’ I got a taste of something totally new. Their weirdness. Their play on tropes. Their completely unhinged attitude. The creators that take part in this low-poly horror aesthetic are a brand of their own and it’s a spectacle you owe it to yourself to behold. Since then I’ve played everything Haunted PS1, Dread X, and all the other random horror demos I could find on Steam! It’s safe to say I’ve been eagerly anticipating the 2022 demo disc and it has not disappointed. LONG LIVE SKULLY!

Dem-OH! Dashes

Only 37 demos during the (regular) live streams this month… That has got to be a new record of shame! However, with less that 50 new demos currently installed (an all-time low for me), September is going to see us cleaning out our Steam libraries in preparation for the burst of juicy new demos releasing for the October #NextFest. THIS is the time we find the most surprises – as we dig a little deeper for demo content – and personally I’m very excited to see what hidden gems we uncover!

NOTE: Ratings are basically representative of how much I enjoyed the demo and the likelihood that I’ll come back to the title in the future (or even would liked to have continued playing it right then), with regards to gameplay, quality, and (of course) personal preference to genre, etc. A zero represents that the game is too non-functional to really get a feel for it. It is essentially a non-rating.
