Dust 514

Dust 514 was always meant to be Free To Play, and now it is

Eurogamer report that Dust 514, the upcoming PS3 exclusive with ties to Eve Online, will be a Free to Play title. In fact, it was always meant to be this way.

Their report cites that the original idea was to put a price tag on the game, and then reimburse players by converting that initial charge to credits for players to spend in-game, but now the idea of that opening cover charge is gone – making the game completly free.

Brandon Laurino, the game’s executive producer, has tired to quell fears that players could buy upgrades to give them an advantage over players who chose not to pay. “It’s very important as we take steps into this topic to unambiguously state that it is not a pay to win game,” he comments.

There is no micro-transaction that you can do that gives you an unfair advantage over someone who hasn’t paid anything. It’s the classic micro-transaction dynamic of, ‘I can pay and get this item,’ or, ‘I can invest my time and get this item.’ But neither of those options will give me an unfair advantage over the other.

Laurino also comments that the game’s microtransactions could range from something that is “a penny sort of value” to items that are much higher in price.
