Call of Duty 4 reaches 10 million units sold

There are some sales milestones that every developer would love their game to reach. A million unit sales is impressive, five million is astounding, and ten million is usually just a dream. So it’s with some considerable pride that Vince Zampella, Head of Infinity Ward, announced that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has sold its ten millionth copy.

Activision, who has had great success with the Guitar Hero, Tony Hawks and Spiderman franchises, has now published the highest-selling game of this console generation. Activision wholly owns Infinity Ward and after creating such a critically and commercially popular title it isn’t likely they’ll be selling them off anytime soon.

Call of Duty 4 is now within the top 10 of highest selling console games of all time (not counting bundled games or handhelds). Despite not getting as much mainstream media attention as titles like Halo 3, the game reached eight digits in unit sales, no doubt helped by the fact that it was released over three different platforms.

Infinity Ward wasn’t able to say exactly how many units the game had sold on each platform it is available on – Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC – but did say that COD 4 had been most successful on the Xbox 360.

As for Call of Duty 5, Activision has still not confirmed which development studio is working on the game, Treyarch or Infinity Ward. Rumors suggest the former, who were behind the comparatively mediocre Call of Duty 3. But we can always hope that Infinity Ward gets to work their magic on another title in the not-too-distant future.

However, Call of Duty 4 isn’t done yet! According to Zampella it’s still selling well, and revealed that it’s map pack add-on has sold over 1.5 million copies. At just under £7 a pop that’s easily over £10 million this has made for Activision, showing that COD4 is still a moneymaking machine.
