Wii Sports becomes ‘best-selling’ game ever

According to stats-masters VGChartz, Wii Sports has just become the ‘best-selling’ game in history. You’ll notice the quote-marks around best-selling, because Wii Sports has been bundled with the Wii console since launch in most territories.

Still, it’s undeniable that this compilation of five sports mini-games has been played by more people than any other game ever. Wii Sports now sits under more telly’s (dust-covered and otherwise) than any other better game that has ever been made. It’s up to you to decide whether this is a positive sign of changing times or the First Horseman of the Apocalypse..

Wii Sports’ 40.53 million copies shifted has beaten the previous winner, Super Mario Bros. (which was also bundled) by a mere 280,000 copies. Nintendo don’t appear to have much competition though, as according to VGChartz they hold all top 10 positions for best-selling console and handheld games. The list is as follows:

Pokemon Red/Green/Blue (GameBoy) – 31.38m
Tetris (GameBoy) – 30.26m
Duck Hunt (NES) – 28.31m
Pokemon Gold/Silver (GameBoy) – 23.11m
Nintendogs (DS) – 21.37m
Super Mario World (SNES) – 20.61m
Wii Play (Wii) – 19.68m
Super Mario Land (GameBoy) – 18.14m

All hail Nintendo! Just from those ten games, that’s a staggering total of 273,620,000 games shifted. Somehow we reckon that Nintendo will be able to survive the global economic crisis…
