Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy – “I prefer Katamari Damacy and Wipeout in my free time”

As Hurricane Sandy moves ashore with an unprecedented amount of fury, we managed to snag a few quotes from her despite her rather busy schedule. (Note – the author of this piece lives within the hurricane’s expected path. Batten down the hatches everyone.)

Q: Sandy, you’re keeping yourself rather busy – when do you find time for video games?

A: Part of the reason I play video games is for inspiration. I consider myself an artist, and some games inspire my artistry. It’s not easy being in six states at once, but games keep my mind away from the fact that my doctor said I might have just hours left to live.

Q: Just hours left? I’m sorry to hear that.

A: It’s okay. I just think I’m a little depressed…excuse me. I’m going to be a little depression.

Q: You mention inspiration – what games inspire you?

A: I prefer Katamari Damacy and Wipeout in my free time. I have combined their gameplay mechanics and am attempting to stretch the boundaries of their efforts. I also don’t mind occasionally playing Pokemon.

Q: Why’s that?

A: Gotta catch everything.

Q: Given that you have a penchant for chaos, what do you think of games like Shadow of the Colossus and Monsters vs. Aliens?

A: I don’t play them. Those monsters often stop short of true chaos. And I wouldn’t consider their gameplay even remotely close to the vision I have. You see, not only am I an artist, but I’m a very serious judge of character. Get out of my way, or you’ll pay the price. *laughs* Destruction requires more than just random strikes. You have to have a clear path that only you know, and leave everyone guessing where you will finally end. Lastly, you need to do what none of those monsters could do – stick the landing and leave a lasting mark.

Q: Are there any gamers or games that annoy you?

A: *laughs* Yes! Kelly Slater and that stupid game of his – Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer. They have no respect for me. They’re like, “Oh, let’s ride all over her face and show her who’s boss.” Now I’m here, and where are they? I delivered a product, and they can’t handle it. Typical men.

Q: Thanks for your time Sandy. As a final thought, do you have any last words for your audience?

A: I’m an artist. Real artists don’t play hypothetical games, and I’m a firm believer that you should never leave any stone unturned in a search for perfection. With that said, I’ll leave you with the immortal words of my good friend GLaDOS: “This was a triumph. I’m making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS!”

We wish we had more time to interview Sandy, but she was rather keen on making landfall Monday night. Be safe everyone, and remember – Sandy’s not playing games.
