Superman inspired Megaton Rainfall is worth getting excited about, and other news bits

Starting today with this news item, DarkZero is making the biggest change we’ve ever made to the way we do daily news items. From now on, we will no longer post photos of bunnies. In place of bunnies, we’ll have iguanas, who will tell you what they think, but not all iguanas are the same. There are in fact three different kinds of iguana – Reci, Essi and Avi. As a result of these changes, we will no longer be listed on the Bunnie-aggregation website Rabbitcritic.

Did you see this teaser trailer for Megaton Rainfall? The title looks to be very much a work-in-progress (with only one year of full-time dev put into the project), but it is certainly very impressive. So what exactly is Megaton Rainfall? Well, according to the developer (which currently consists of just one man), it is a First Person Superhero Game.

Sure, we’ve had superhero games before, and we’ve had flying before too, but what stands out most here is that the scale of the game is hugely impressive. You control a character that can fly from earth’s orbit all the way to street level at lightning speed, then back to orbit again before you even blink an eye. Then, if you have a few extra seconds to spare, you can move from earth’s orbit to the limits of the Milky Way before you have time to realise it is even happening.

The developer himself comments on the game’s scale in a blog post. “I promise [Megaton Rainfall] will be a record breaking game in many ways. If you’ve seen the teaser, you can figure out that one way will be the scale of destruction. There are other superhero games, but in them you don’t unintentionally destroy skyscrapers every time you miss your target,” Alfonso del Cerro comments.

A recent Twitter post mentions a possible demo may be released a few months down the line. Another social media comment confirms the game will endeavor to support Oculus Rift. Both very exciting! At the very least, the whole thing is certainly a much better experience than being tasked with solving Lex Luthor’s maze in Superman 64. Remember that?

If anyone is heading to GDC, the good news is that the game is scheduled to be there as part of the Indie Megabooth. Until then we can just watch videos and wonder. Here is the best one!

News Bits

  • Nintendo are polling who you would pick as your Valentine – giving a choice between 6 of the mainline Mushroom Kingdom characters. The fanfiction Tumblrs are probably having a massive breakdown right now. I am not opening any incognito tab to check.
  • David Cameron visited the developers of Train Simulator and looked menacingly at a computer monitor. We really should start a  caption contest for that one.
  • The Transistor Theme for PS4 might actually be the first Theme ever worth buying for a console. It looks pretty good.
  • Expect whatever happens next with Titanfall to be multiplatform. Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen said this; “Last year it was on the Xbox only; in the future, we haven’t yet announced, but we’ll probably have another Titanfall game. It will probably be a bigger footprint than just a single platform. I think that’s a huge positive for us.” You don’t even have to read between the lines.
  • Going 242mph in Driveclub looks (and sounds) like this.
  • Here is an Alpha demo for a game called Drift Stage. Here is the Kickstarter (that is now fully funded, and complete). It is supposed to be released December 2015, and I am excited to see how this one turns out.
  • The upcoming Hitman: Agent 47 film has a new theatrical trailer. I did not hear Ave Maria once though – so  screw that thing!
  • 3D Streets of Rage 2 rated just got rated in Australia.
  • Now Eurogamer present evidence of Peter Molyneux’s dickishness.
  • Ed Boon is teasing SOMETHING about Mortal Kombat X on Twitter. New character, maybe. The obvious answer seems too obvious, so I wont mention Twisted Metal. Oops.
