Square Enix outline their horrible new approach that may kill both them and Eidos

Here is a PDF that does not make good reading if you like Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs, Deus Ex, and/or good RPG releases.

If you have not already clicked through, the PDF details Square Enix’s financial results for the past 6 months, and how they plan to improve things going forward. To sum it up, things do not look spectacular, and the company, as a whole, is looking to change.

In easy to read bullet point form, Square Enix state that going forward, their “overseas studios” (Eidos) will see a “shift to focus on online based titles” in the near future, and their Japanese based teams will “accelerate the production of titles for smart devices.

The PDF also highlights that they are looking to “transform the fixed-price model into [a] variable earnings model” – with Nosgoth cited as a example of the upcoming F2P games they are focusing on.

The slides do not go into much more details, and only seem to be a short outlook on their plans going forward, but highlighting Free To Play games and various smartphone re-release as their main future plans will not please too many people.

I am going to replay Chrono Trigger, and start to worry.
