Sony TGS Conference Was The Worst Ever?

Sony conference at the Tokyo Game Show has just finished and unless you find some CGI of African baby elephants intresting you’re not going to be very happy with that the Krazy Ken had to say at the event. The conference itself begin almost 10 minutes late, you would think they were trying to build up some hype by making people wait but that not at all what happened. At 2:12AM (BST) Ken Kutaragi came on stage and began his talk titled “PS3 – Creating the next generation of computer entertainment

Things started out well with Ken announcing there would be over 200 consoles in the venue for the show. From there he went on to introduce some video of Ridge Racer, Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight, FFXIII and Virtua Fighter 4 running on a PS3 in all its high-def glory. Although it was just videos of game the gathered audience seemed interested enough in what they saw, Sony were indeed of to a good start and were finally going to let their games shine and showcase the power of the PS3

Er, No….

That’s all the games that Ken had to show – from there on Ken talked about the progression of PS1 through to PS3, PC’s, mobile phones, databases and something called GMS – Global Mapping System and shopping. People were bored…If kids were allowed into the conference they might have broken down in tears.

Finally after an hour of explaining the Internet is not a dump truck but a series of tubes he mentioned that Mega Drive and PC Engine game would be downloaded to the PS3 on Sony network, he also said some videos would make there way onto the network too. Overall he made the whole thing sound like some bastard child of an Xbox360 and a Wii after a night of togetherness.

After that it looked like things were finally looking up as Ken showed a tech demo titled Afrika that showed jungles, plains, and some really lovely elephants and wildebeest running around. The video looked great but it was not a game, it was nothing more than a tech demo that none of us would ever play.

After this played things were once again looking up. The audiences were waiting for Ken to open the floodgate. “Show us the games”, “show us the games” they were probably chanting in their heads but the poor, poor audience we not about to get any games as Ken announced the show was over and invited some selected people to ask some questions. Sadly, the Q ‘n A was akin to a Fox News interview with President Bush where no hard questions were asked. Then Ken walked of stage, it was all over, there was nothing to see here!

It looks like Sony ruined their chance to once again get the mass media painting the PS3 in a positive light. Sure they have “200 units on the show floor” but those game better be awe inspiringly good to recovered from possibly the worst attempt at a conference ever. Overall very disappointing.

I watched it through a live feed, I cant actually believe how little they talked about at such a crucial stage. Most of the launch titles such as warhawk and MGS arent gonna be ready till fall 2007, so I dont know what else is coming bar virtua tennis (also on 360) and ridge racer (again)
