Sony confirm LBP delay due to references to the Qu’ran

Sony has now confirmed that LittleBigPlanet will not make its October 24th date, and will be delayed by three weeks until November 14. They have released a statement which confirms our earlier reports that the delay had a connection to references to the Qu’ran within the game.

During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qu’ran,” remarks the company in a statement.

We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused,” it concludes.

  1. I just don’t get why they’ve left it so late to check things like this. Plonkers.

Next we’ll hear that SackBoy is actually considered to be racist imagery, and LittleBigPlanet will be delayed six months.

Then the Athiests society will call for it to be banned because of its emphasis on Creationism.

Won’t somebody please think of the children!?

  2. It sounds like no offence was intended, one can’t help but feel like this is an overreaction. A patch, as you suggested earlier, would have been an easier option. I’d imagine they’ll be binning millions of discs as a result of this, which would be quite a waste.

Perhaps they are just trying to avoid the bad press they received after the Church’s criticism of Manchester cathedral featuring in that extremely average launch game.

Still.. it’s not as bad as when SCEE stripped out every movie sequence from Twisted Metal Black because SANE complained it depicted mentally ill people in a bad light. I’m still trying to get over that disappointment.

  3. Ahh.. Censorship. Is there anything worse?

I’m offended by many things. So I choose not to consume that particular media. Is it that hard for people?

  4. Sony’s publishing guidelines stipulate that religious imagery that may cause offense will not be allowed, and this is why they took such drastic steps – not as a knee jerk reaction but to enforce their own rules.
