So what were the best-selling games in the UK last year?

Earlier this week we told you that a huge 82.8 million games were sold in the UK in 2008. But wouldn’t you like to know which ones sold the most? Well, it’s your lucky day, as MCV have revealed Chart-Track’s Top 10’s both for individual formats and combined formats.

Unsurprisingly, both charts are dominated by Nintendo. Mario Kart Wii was the best-selling single-format game of the year. It went straight to Number 1 in the charts when it was released in April and has stayed around the Top 5 with consistent sales throughout the year since then.

Wii Fit also hit shelves in April, and has been selling out repeatedly ever since. The Balance Board has been bouncing up and down the charts like a crazy fitness instructor doing star jumps, as retail stock continously gets replenished and sells out once again.

Four of the six Nintendo-exclusive games in the Top 10 weren’t even released in 2008. Wii Play, Wii Fit, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training and Carnival Games. Any of my fellow Britons who purchased the atrocious piece of trash that is Carnival Games (and there must be a lot of you) should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves. The fact it can now be bought for under a tenner is no excuse.

The big multi-format winner was FIFA 09, which has been around 2nd place in the charts every week since it’s release, briefly coming forward to claim the Christmas Number One spot. In fact, FIFA 09 has now sold over 2 million copies in the UK alone.

GTA IV unsurprisingly did pretty well, having one of the biggest game launches ever can do that. Although it sold a phenomenal number of units when it was first released, Grand Theft Auto IV has hardly appeared in the charts since, and doesn’t seem to have the staying power of other titles.

Call of Duty: World at War was released relatively late in the year, but has been stuck right at the top of the charts for the last month or so. It looks like this game will have a tail that will continue well into the first quarter of 2009.

Finally, Lego Indiana Jones was released on almost every platform known to man, and riding on the wave of Lego Star Wars success it managed to break into the All Formats top 10 for the year. If I had any money in these difficult times, I would bet it all on Lego Harry Potter being one of the best-selling games of 2009.
