Rockstar give advice for GTA freeze problems (Update 2)

Update 2: The game has been patched
Update: It now seems the problems are much more widespread than originally thought, with quite a few people having glitches mess up with their game. The problems seem to affect mostly 60GB units, with many people commenting that that they experience the lock up’s on units they bought at the launch of the PS3. It is currently not known if the problems are exclusive to console made/bought during this time frame. No certain part of the game seems to trigger the lock-up and it seems it can hit randomly at any point.
The delete / reinstall solution below, the one we originally reported does not seem to fix the problem, and may only work in a certain number of cases. It seems that Rocksar have now dismissed this as a fix, and are no longer telling people this option on their helpline. It seems best to use it only as a last resort.
As a temporary solution it seems many are finding a way around the problem by disabling their internet connection while playing. It may be a bit awkward but it seems it fixes the problem for a few. It is still far from ideal though.
———————————–
Apparently some people, albeit a small minority of people are having some problems with GTA IV randomly freezing and locking up on them. If you happen to be one of those poor people, and in particular own a PS3 then Rockstar have taken the time to give advice on what to do with your game.
It seems the best course of action is to erase your game data and reinstall Grand Theft Auto IV if your PS3 freezes during gameplay - at least that is what Rockstar are currently telling people who ring their helping reporting the problems. Reports hint that it works, too.

That report is false, I am on my 3rd disc and have re-installed each one at least 12 times and still freezing up.

The game suffers the same problem on Xbox. A friend of mine can’t play more than 1 or 2 minutes at a time, it won’t stop freezing. He tried to erase his save, to empty the console’s cache but it is totally impossible to play. I think he is about to kill himself. Greetings from France ^^

Yeah unfortunately I AM one of those owners. Picked up my game at midnight at the local GameStop. No go!! The game always locks up after about two min of play. I after several “fixes” (power cycles / reinstalls) I exchanged the game earlier today.
From what I’ve seen online a lot more people are having the same trouble. I think we’ll have a better idea how many systems are being affected by this issue once we all get home from work and fire up our respective consoles.

Please correct this story. This fix does not work, and is not an official position taken by Rockstar. The problem is not cleared up by deleting and reinstalling in any way shape or form, and neither does turning off processes like Media Server, Wireless Internet or News Panel do any good. I returned my GTA IV for PS3 today for a refund. I’ll buy it again once Rockstar can give me a disc that works first time every time. This is more widespread than you indicate and posting false fixes does not help.

I think you’ll find the author has only written about what he’s observed - people complaining that the game didn’t work, people reporting on what Rockstar told them to do, and then people saying it worked. The fact that it doesn’t work for everyone doesn’t invalidate the story.

I truly wish everyone would stop posting all these false fixes, all it does is give the people with the actual problem false hope. I am one of the unlucky, apparently few, people with the freezing issue. I bought game at midnight Monday, when I discovered the problem I tried reinstalling, to no avail. The next morning when Gamestop opened I returned the game, came home reinstalled, same results. This is when I turned to the internet for advise, tried turning off the ticker, disconnecting the internet, reinstalling, nothing works. I have a 60 gig launch ps3, that I love tremendously, with all my pictures and video of my kids from the last couple years. If my ps3 didnt have such valuable stuff on it, it would have been returned by now. So, in a last ditch effort to resolve the issue I called Rockstar, they told me they have had tons of calls about this and said there is nothing that can be done to fix it yet, they took down my info and promised to let me know asap when they come up with a solution. I truly hope everone who doesnt have the problem and know what they are talking about would please shut the f*** up until Rockstar issues a real release!!
A very annoyed fan

Jeeze, what a psycho.
Firstly, the person who posted this story didn’t know it wouldn’t work for everybody, as apparently it works for some. If it doesn’t work for you, then I feel bad for you. I truly wish you good luck in finding a fix! But for those that it does work for, this article could prove quite helpful.
This story is not false. It could be edited to say it fixes some of the problem, but just cause it doesn’t fix yours doesn’t make it wrong.

Yeah, 80 Gig Owner here, My game first started to freeze as soon as I got to Romans place. So I did all of that junk that ppl said might work, PS network, Media, and Reinstalling. After my 6th time reinstalling, it started to freeze sooner. Like 30 seconds into the game…
This is the biggest disappointment ever…

I live in Portugal and I am an owner of a 60GB PS3 Console, and i’m very dissapointed with Rockstar, for giving no support to these multiple situations yet.
I had one different problem with this game today, its about crashing, but the crash occured several times on the loading time just after i insert the CD(and repeating this 6 times (in, out, in, out….)).
I decided to erase the save files and see what comes next, i hope the game will run well, because it just crashed me one time when i was driving a car.
My advice to Rockstar is to make some patches for the game to fix this crashes, and disponibilize them all on Playstation Online Stores ( and the same on XBOX Live corse).

Yup, this is aload of bollox. To look forward to this title for so long and for this to happen is just fucking scandalous. Article says “a few” <this is not true, browse through forums and Yahoo answers and u ll see the extent of the problem. To be honest, if I could convince everyone who is havin problems to get a refund back, i d be a happy man, “Rockstar games smash records” we read in our papers, well fuck Rockstar games, get ur money back and let them drop into the red is my mentality.

I had this exact problem, go into your settings and disable the internet connection while your playing, ive already emailed take two games about it, so they are aware of the issue, but when you network connection is disabled it seems to work ok.
Good luck.

Thanks William.
Back when Sony introduced the ‘info box’ that sits on the dashboard that caused some problems, have those with crashing problems tried disabling this?

Been playing the game on a 60GB PS3 since release day, had about 7 hours play now. Offline play is perfect, no problems there at all.
Tried multiplayer and for the first few days I couldn’t connect to the server. Now that it’s finally started connecting to the server after I sign in to the Network, the screen freezes, before you even get to pick a multiplayer game play option.
That’s annoying, would be cool to see what the multiplayer games are like, but at least I can play the single player game without freezing. That seems to be the case, fingers crossed that the fault won’t kick in later in the game.
Here’s hoping Rockstar work it out and fix this for everyone quickly, and that we can all use all the game modes soon.

Guys and gals I understand that its frustrating that you can’t play (for those who have the problem) But actually try not connecting online. Shut off your wireless thing on the PS3 or disconnect the Ethernet cable.
I have my stuff moved around in my house so my PS3 isn’t connected. I have a 60GB one and I’ve been playing for over 20hours since I got the game. Only froze once. I went into the gunshop but I killed the store guy earlier when I went back I froze up when I entered the shop and he wasn’t there. Restarted and never happened again (now I won’t kill him anymore lol)

Got a launch 60Gb here, installed fine, but issue was after the intro ended when it started saying loading in the bottom right corner it would always freeze there. took about 5 trys on average to get past that, when first started froze on cut scene in roman’s house but after getting past that it has also frozen at random times in the game and still at the initial loading. After reading this site I tried disabling internet connection and it worked first try, no re-install or any other things changed. Played for a couple hours with no problems and doesn’t hang on initial load either.

I heard somewhere else that it could help to buy a canister of compressed air and to clean out all the dust from inside your PS3. Apparently a lot of dust builds up inside it, and some people have reported a quicker running PS3 after doing so. It may help, but it may not. Could be worth a try.
60GB PS3s being some of the oldest ones may have built up the most dust…

Update on my previous post…
Got into the online multiplayer games for the first time today, played without any problems.
Played the single player game for several hours today - with internet turned on - and still no freezing on my copy.
I guess it must be hit and miss, if you have a copy that works fine.
Perhaps I just got lucky. We’ll see…

im in the USA and i own a 60 gig ps3… ive been waiting for this game 2 come out ever since last year!!… its really surprising that a company like rockstar can make a mistake like this.. at 1st i thought my ps3 got messed up…i went 2 exchange my copy at gamestop for a new 1 2 c if it was just the game being totally messed up… when i played the new copy i got 2day the same thing keeps on happening…i have not done even 3 misions. now i hear its happening all over the place. Ive tried everything from reinstalling the game, deleting all the previous GTA 4 saved games, and even disabling my internet but nothing seems to work….

I’ve exchanged the game 3 times.
My First disk: Would freeze as soon as I got to romans house, from the loading screen. After reinstalling, disconnecting, and rebooting a billion times I decided to go exchange it.
My Second Disk: I reinstalled it, EVEN WITH THE PSN enabled! And my game went on working fine for hours. GOT TO PLAY MULTIPLAYER! But a soon as I got to the second Little Jacob mission it started to freeze again. So I felt if a switched the disk again I could continue my game.
My Third Disk: I reinstalled it, THE PSN WAS DISABLED, and it froze in the exact same spot. AND I CAN’T PLAY ONLINE ANYMORE! Every time i reinstalled this one, it would freeze sooner and sooner into the game.
I really don’t know what to do next. I’m pulling my hair out for this disappointment…

Yeah… Have a 360 in the US… and GTA4 freezes on me as well. I deleted my save file and everything but after the cutscene, I am in Roman’s taxi and it freezes within 3 seconds. It might be because I saved the game after using cheats. I dont know. I think it’s either the game or the Xbox…
I have no Idea what to do. Real P.O.’ed
Advice to Rockstar- Dont put cheats in the game if it freezes it up.

I HAVE BOUGHT THE GAME FOR THE XBOX AND NEVER HAD A SINGLE GLITCH… I AM CURRENTLY AT 30% COMPLETION OF THE GAME. I DON´T THINK THIS IS A PROBLEM RELATING TO ROCKSTAR, BUT OVERHEATING OF XBOX´S. I HAVE BURNT 2 PREVIOUS XBOXS UNTIL THE FALCON MOTHERBOARD FOR THE XBOX CAME OUT.
