We’ve always said that there is not near enough Western inspired games available these days. So much so, that Sunset Riders on the SNES can still be classed as on of the best available.
However, Rockstar look to be trying their best to rectify this by announcing Red Dead Redemption for PS3 and Xbox 360, which is due out in autumn 2009, and will be sequel to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver on PS2 and Xbox
The game will be developed by the same people who worked on the original, Rockstar San Diego, but will not be as linear, as it takes place an openworld akin to GTA, albeit with a “turn of the 20th century” Wild West setting. The game will use a lot of the tech used in GTA, including Rockstar’s proprietary RAGE engine that Liberty City was built around.
We actually reviewed the 2004 original, back when we were just one year old. We ended up giving it an 8/10, with Jo commeting “I just wish that something less linear and more liberal had resulted from the formula.” Maybe Rockstar will make that wish come through in the sequel.

Man this sounds cool. This is the first 2009 game that I’m genuinely looking forward to.

I enjoyed the original Red Dead Revolver, so the prospect of a next-gen version using GTAIV tech is certainly exciting.
I hope it doesnt follow all the trends of GTAIV though. Otherwise you’ll end up playing as a Irish immigrant to Dodge City, and the Sheriff will make you ride your horse across the other side of the city to activate a mission…
