One Pokemon game is been jointly played by thousands on Twitch

There is a new channel up on Twitch. It is called Twitch Plays Pokemon.

The basic idea behind the channel is to let Twitch Chat users choose what to do in the game. This is done by hooking up an emulated version of the game to accept basic inputs from Twitch chat. This means the game will respond every time someone posts right, left, up, down, A, B, Start, and Select in chat.

As you could guess, giving such power to Twitch Chat could lead to madness, and it has.

However, things could be worse. At the time of writing, the experiment has been running for almost a day and a half. Two Pokemon have been got – starter Pokemon Charmander, and a random wild Pidgey.

In this time, Charmander has reached level 22 and evolved to Charmeleon. The group of players have also managed to best the first gym, and are slowly on their way to the second.
