Nintendo’s new revamped DS launched on Saturday November 1st in Japan, with the hardware manufacturer annoucing that the intitial shipment would comprise 200,000 DSi units.

By Sunday, its second day of availability, a total of 170,779 of those units had been sold, with the remainder being snapped up by the third day. Nintendo said that the redesigned handheld would have completely sold out in its opening weekend had it not been for some unclaimed preorders and a few stores holding back stock until the Monday, which was a public holiday in Japan. (No, it wasn’t National DSi Day either..)

Nintendo intends to have another 100,000 units available for sale in stores by tomorrow. No prizes for guessing whether they’ll be sold out within a week. The launch of the DSi now takes the total Japanese sales for the DS platform to a whopping 23,624,419 units, making it the bestselling gaming system of all time in Japan.
