Grey Goo developers bring military MOBA Victory Command to Steam Early Access

Petroglyph, the studio that developed the great throwback to old RTS games, Grey Goo, has teamed up with PlayGrid Games to bring Victory Command, a title that blends RTS controls with MOBA mechanics to bring a twist on the genre to Steam Early Access.

Victory Command players will simultaneously command multiple units of armored, recon, and infantry units to engage in 5v5 team combat. They embark on their military career given just basic companies, and then improve their troops and arsenal by earning experience points that they can use to upgrade their company and obtain special abilities and skills. Combining the cooperation and competition of battle arena games with strategic gameplay on an open field, players can flank, ambush and trap their opponents to achieve victory.

The developers aren’t sure how long the game will remain in Early Access, since “The majority of core elements of Victory Command are in and working as designed. What we don’t know is the exact configuration of Companies, Map Objectives, Units, Stats, Economy, and other elements that will deliver the overall best experience. With player feedback, we will continue to develop the core features as we add additional features like awards, achievements, and social elements. The full version will have more polish, tuning, and balancing as well as a better new player experience, additional maps, smoother start, and more changes based on your feedback,” which makes it sound possible that the game will be in Early Access for quite some time, similar to how a lot of MOBA games have remained in the Beta phase until plenty of content and characters are released.

Currently the game is fully playable and includes 15 Companies with a full set of Units, Perks, Abilities, and Drones, with a few starter maps to allow people to play various layouts. Victory Command will be free-to-play at launch, but to say thank you for the support, when the game launches in full release, Early Access backers will receive a gift of in-game currency or premium membership equal to or above the price of Early Access, although, the last line is interesting, as the developers  “can make no guarantee that a full release or the gift will happen,” which sounds like a way to cover themselves if any problems arrive.

Victory Command Key Features:

  • Fast-paced 5v5 multi-player military MOBA where each player controls one of 15 customizable companies of 2 to 12 units each, enabling them to devise and execute intricate team-based strategies.
  • The game’s open field battle arena allows for fluid gameplay across any part of the map – not just three lanes – providing distinctive match structures and play mechanics.
  • Multiple maps bring to life a variety of terrains which can work to your advantage or disadvantage. These features include: line-of-sight, brush, heavy cover, vantage points, infantry-only paths, water features, and more.
  • Every company has a set of Company Abilities to choose from, providing game-changing offensive and defensive actions including airstrikes, anti-weapon gas, ensnare, napalm strike, unit tracking and many more.
  • Players can strategically mix and match units in hundreds of ways within their company to create a custom tactical force. Play in short, frenetic matches to earn experience, improve stats, unlock new skills, and gain powerful abilities with different unit types.
  • Victory Command will have a stream of continuous updates with new content rolling out regularly.
