C-C-C-Combo Breaker! Amazon buys Double Helix

News has emerged for us to be able to run a news story with C-C-C-Combo Breaker Breaker in the title, which is always good news.

This news is that Amazon has acquired Double Helix Games. The deal covers all IP they owned (not IP they were tasked with, or licenced), along with the current teams and individuals at the studio. Basically, Amazon bought everything they could.

Double Helix were working on some solid stuff recently. Killer Instinct for Xbox One – that got good press, and a multi-console remake of Strider – which has been getting good press.

They also worked on quite a lot of bad stuff in years before. Including, the video game versions of GI Joe: Rise of Cobra and Battleship. I played them. They were horrible, horrible things. A Green Lantern game – also bad. A not too well recived version of the Silent Hill franchise, and a microtransation filled version of the MX vs ATV series.

Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovate games for customers,” is the only statement Amazon has chosen to give on the matter currently.

More details are expected to come out in the next few days, but this revelation certainly fuels the rumors that Amazon are working on plans to release a console platform to compete with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

Microsoft’s Phil Spenser has spoken out to comment on the situation. “Our internal KI team is still here and franchise is in good hands. We had a plan in place for this transition,” he c-c-c-commented on Twitter.

Capcom remain silent on how this will affect work on the new Strider game.
