Blizzard not allowing mods in Diablo 3, may make DLC available

More news coming out a Blizzcon reveals that Blizzard will not be letting any mods be made available for Diablo III.
“We don’t have a lot of plans to do that. It would make our lives so much harder,” comments Diablo III director Jay Wilson when questioned on the matter.
He goes onto comment that he knows many that fans would like to see it happen, and he known that that where many designers first got their start. However, he reveals the team will take a very strong stance on any kind of “hacking” seen in the game come release.
“We are going to monetize features so that we get to make them… We kind of have to,” he concluded.

Sad to hear this, really sad. Blizzard is alienating a whole fanbase of those who enjoy their work enough to sink years of their time into creating custom skills, spells and etc. based on their game.

This is a step in the wrong direction. DLC for non-MMO’s is a proven failed business model ALA HG:L
There’s no reason to believe that blizzard won’t do the same as them and remove basic gameplay features for a quick buck.

@slash - is it really a failed business model? I expect Bungie made a lot of money off their map packs. I’m not a fan of most DLC but as a secondary income model it has few downsides for the developer. In the case of LittleBigPlanet they’re throwing a lot of cheap costumes around PSN that I’m sure a few people will buy.

Ben is right. The Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack sold 1 million downloads within the first nine days of it’s release. That cost 800 points (£6.80).
I can’t imagine it costing anywhere near £1,000,000 to create and digitally distribute four maps, therefore the return on their investment would have been immense.
