Bioshock just could have many sequels, akin to Star Wars

Speaking to MCV, 2K have said that the Bioshock series could go on for many more years, with numerous titles being developed using the licence. They did however admit they would have to be careful with the series, or it could end up losing its appeal
“If we spin [it] the right way, and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did,” commets 2K president Christoph Hartmann when questioned by MCV. “Look at Star Wars. It’s a fight between good and evil, just like BioShock.”
“But we have to be careful not to cash in,” he added. “Because [BioShock] is so story driven, the question obviously arises: how long can you do it without turning into The Matrix? The first Matrix was great, the second one was weird and the third one, you thought: ‘Who [making this] is on crack and who isn’t?’”
Hartmann then went on to indirectly name the Need for Speed series as an example of doing it wrong. “I won’t name the company, but there was a great racing game years ago. They brought it back year-on-year. If you look at the scores, it’s hard to believe what they’ve done to it. It’s upsetting, actually.“

I really think that Bioshock should have just been left as a standalone game. It was a brilliant game, but more for the uniqueness of the setting and the power of the narrative than for the gameplay.
Call me a pessimist but I don’t hold out much hope for Bioshock 2 building on the first game’s strengths in any meaningful way.

I was pretty fed up with rapture after I’d finished Bioshock, I really don’t think I’d play another unless it were set somewhere completely different.
