Battlefield 1943 breaks download sales records

We knew that Battlefield 1943 was somewhat popular. The fact that you couldn’t join a match for the first few days of its release, and that EA had to quadruple their server capacity is a testament to that. But now we have some figures that show just how successful it has been.

DICE and EA have announced that Battlefield 1943 is the fastest-selling day one and week one downloadable game worldwide in Xbox Live history. It’s also broken the same records on the Playstation Network in North America. Since it launched on the 8th July, the game has sold over 600,000 copies in total.

As sales figures are rarely released for digitally distributed titles, it’s hard to say how this may compare to other games’ overall sales figures, but EA will certainly have made a substantial profit for this venture, so we are certain to see more examples of this type of product in the future.

“We are honoured by the reception that the game has received so far,” said Battlefield 1943 producer Gordon Van Dyke. “We can now truly say that we have set a new standard for what can be done in the downloadable games category.”

Battlefield 1943 is available for 1200 MS Points on Xbox Live, and £9.99 on PSN. If you’ve listened to our latest podcast, you’ll know that we all think it’s bloody brilliant. So do yourself a favour, and join in the battle!
