Im all for experiments, don't get me wrong. Im just saying those experiments this year didn't work for me, some people loved the minimalisation within POP and Far Cry I just found it neigh on incredibly repeative.

And At Bagpuss - its hardly fun to do that.

Lists like this never please everybody, COD WAW was on my list but due to the overwhelming amount of brilliant games that everyone in DarkZero has played over the year it didn't make it onto anyone else's.

A year is a long time and games get forgotten when it comes to these lists, it's also been one of the best years for gaming! :D

I don't know, Steve, all the games you listed there i throroughly enjoyed - pretty much every one is in my own top 10. Also worth noting is the innovation (or at least a bloody good crack at) in an industry that's over-saturated with tried-and-tested recycled games like Saints Row 2 and CoDWoW.

I'll personally welcome any studio that'll take another even mildly successful jab at doing something new.

Which leads me onto Dead Space - i was shocked at the amount of solid ideas in that game. Did any of the staff manage to play it this year?

Steve: There is a way to stop people from swimming for 10 minutes to the objective during GTA's online - it's called getting in a boat and tracking them down.

Faroon, if it makes you feel any better, I didn't play Dead Space, but I'm pretty sure if I did it would've been my number 1. I love that sort of shit. My bank balance, less so.

Fair enough, was a bit negative, also a bit rushed.

I have to say at this point most video games this year were sequals and I dunno im getting bored of that.

The other trend this year were experiements that didn't work, Mirrors Edge, Far Cry, POP, Burnout Paradise.

At the end of the day its what I enjoyed the most this year and thats CODWOW, which is and im as shocked about this as you are, better than COD4. It's not exactly a unique POV, many people found COD4's appraisal as the best game of last year totally unwarrented what did it really do differently? This time I think they've nailed it.

Oh and Saints Row was a far greater game than GTA, in story, in fun, in lifespan, and it actually had COOP, something that maybe coulda saved GTA4.

But I don't know why im bothering to explain myself to the likes of you, since you've already stated you understand what an opinion is.

"Saints Row 2 on the other hand also had an intreging and satisfying story line."

Really? Compared to GTA? I mean, actually, is this your opinion?

Either way, I'm not fond of personal attacks but your entire post there seems to give the impression that you hate games. That, or you're quite stupid. World at War better than CoD4? Farcry 2 "terrible"? You're entitled to your opinions blah blah blah but just so you know - you're wrong.

Given the choice back in May or April I forgot between a guitar or GTA4 I confused the hell out of my mates with my choice.

When they finished GTA4 I was still playing my guitar, I then lent GTA4 and was truely dissapointed.

GTA4 is all about impression, the story is pretty captivating too but theres nothing really to do outside of the main story thats actually worthwhile, and certainly nothing as fun as Saints Row 2.

Nobody mentioned just how fundermentally flawed the online mode was (no team changing / no way to stop people just swimming for 10 minutes to the objective, and theres other things i've totally forgot but annoyed me.)

I've never actually liked the GTA series, i've always found it intensly repeative and boring, Saints Row 2 on the other hand also had an intreging and satisfying story line wiping out a gang and expanding your grip on the city is always fun but theres so many purposeful things to do around it. Far moreso that going to play darts with a big black man.

Saint's Row 2 was propably my game of the year I truely just find it wins simply on the value for money and sheer fun angle.

Mario Kart Wii, was fun for a while but It seemed that one day we just stopped playing. Looking back its just a minimilistic, uncustomisable peice of repeatition.

SSBB had more of a life span, but the online mode was simply terrible for lag, fun for a few weeks and then just never played it again.

GOW2 was also a disapointment this year, the mulitplayer was still just as broken and repeative as ever and as soon as you realise this it becomes a chore to play. The story was still a mess and the characters were still dislikable marring the rest of the experience.

Far Cry 2 was terrible, period as was Prince of Persia. Seems Ubi Soft went for baron empty open worlds as their fortay of the year. Both tedious, boring, repeative nothing happening epics in nothingness. But HEY at least they looked pretty.

The biggest suprise and perhaps the other best game of my year was COD World at War. Tasking you with burning down beautiful Pacific islands to find the hiding japanese. I actually felt guilty here, since the flame thrower takes up the whole screen, and when you stop all you see is flaming screaming people, flaming foliage and dry smoke. Its a powerful gaming moment in a COD that really looks at the ethics and powerful emotions of war. Also see the pure anger and vengance the Russians teared upon Berlin in the wars final months.

Far better than COD4, which touched on the emotive experience but didn't fully deliver.

Since none of you voted for it, Im guessing you didn't buy it or didn't agree?

I'll withhold judgement on Left 4 dead, Fallout 3 and Fable 2 for now because theres just not enough hours in the day to play them all.

2008 has to be one of the best years in gaming history. With the global economic problems I'm not sure we'll see another like it for quite some time. 2009 could be all about the indie scene.

This top 20 is very strong, with some great titles understandably not making the final list. I'm quite satisfied by how the voting played out.

"A lot of dodgy missions and a well-told but fundamentally limp story didn’t stop me enjoying the hell out of this. To me, it felt like a genuine triumph of pointless fluff over substance. The radio stations, the TV, the internet websites, the spending hours trying to arrange to pick up your girlfriend in a helicopter to take her on a date only to pick her up and then promptly hit a skyscraper by accident and laugh through the tears as you plummet to your doom… it’s awesome. And shame on anyone who traded it in, because with a healthy dose of imagination, playing free mode online with a few friends is still amazingly good fun. If you think it’s boring, you’re boring."

- Thank you Sean, you just made my day, especially with the last few sentences. I can't stand how people whine about this game. It is awesome and fully deserving of its place in your charts.
