Bungie apologises for locking core Destiny 2 content behind DLC

Bungie has issued an apology to fans for locking parts of the core Destiny 2 experience behind a paywall following the release of the game’s first DLC package, Curse of Osiris.

Days after fans criticised Bungie for Destiny 2‘s restrictive XP scaling system, it became apparent following the release of Curse of Osiris that some sections of content that were available to core game owners had in fact become available only to those who had invested in the DLC. This mainly includes high-level content, such as an end-game Prestige Raid and one of the game’s rarest exotic weapons.

The end-game Prestige Raid, which originally had a power requirement 300, was altered to 330 when the Curse of Osiris update hit. However, the only way to reach this power level is by purchasing the DLC–essentially freezing out players who hadn’t bought in to the latest content. Completing this Prestige Raid is required to achieve the game’s Platinum trophy on PS4, which only added fuel to the fire.

However, Bungie published a blog post in which in tried to explain its reasoning behind its actions.

‘In Destiny 1, as your character grew more powerful throughout each expansion, some of our best content, like Vault of Glass, was left behind and lost its relevance for players,’ the developer wrote. ‘We wanted a better solution for Destiny 2, where all of our Endgame activities could stay relevant as each Expansion causes your Guardian to grow more and more powerful.’

‘We’ve heard from the community that both of these plans aren’t working. The Prestige Raid was a novel experience that players value, even if they don’t own Curse of Osiris, and it was a mistake to move that experience out of reach.’

The developer announced that a hotfix will be published this week which will bring the power level of the Prestige Leviathan Raid back down to 300, allowing all players the ability to unlock the Platinum trophy without buying DLC. Also, Trials of the Nine will only require Curse of Osiris when it features a map taken from that DLC pack, meaning everyone can get involved when it features only core maps. And finally, the developer noted that the Prestige Nightfall will remain a ‘pinnacle activity’ with a power level of 330, but that they will alter the requirements for ‘The Prestige’ trophy, meaning it only requires the completion of the Prestige Raid and not the Prestige Nightfall.

Bungie ended the post by thanking fans for their feedback, and promised to ‘continuously improve the Destiny 2 experience.’
