Angry Birds Lego unveiled at Nuremberg Toy Fair 2016

The Angry Birds Movie is coming this year and with it a lot of merchandise. More interesting than most are the Lego Angry Birds sets that feature the projectile flinging pigs and birds.

The Lego Angry Birds sets were unveiled at Nuremberg Toy Fair today alongside other gaming related Lego. This ranged from Mixels (Series 7, 8 and 9) with its own tablet game and cartoon to LEGO Nexo Knights and the toys-to-life style mechanics there.

The Lego Angry Birds set include some destruction elements that ape game-play in the popular app experience. It’s unclear whether this will square the circle and come back as a Lego video-game. Surely if the movie does well

The new Lego Mixels toys work with their related app to unlock characters and progress. Although game-play is lighter touch than other toy-game cross overs it’s proved very popular.

Lego Nexo Knights is the new Lego kid on the block. Each pack comes with a variety of items that can be used to unlock and upgrade in-game characters. The full range of sets is yet to hit retails so it’s likely this will expand beyond what we currently have.

Other sets were also unveiled at the toy fair ranging from the “girl friendly” Lego Friends and Disney Princess sets to the more challenging Lego Technic Bucket Wheel Extractor.

Certainly, running through all of these toys is an acknowledgment that video-games now play a big part in the lives of children. Even the Lego Elves sets had collectible elemental tokens that were used to unlock a magic portal. If that’s not straight out of a video-game I don’t know what is.
