Iranian Government blocking all online activity except for gaming

Our second Government censorship story of the day has a slightly different slant, as this time games are the exception rather than the victim. Since the controversial election results in Iran recently, which saw current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claim the win amid accusations of vote rigging, the Iranian Government’s firewall blocked almost all webpages, email and video streaming into the country.

As many forms of phone and text communication were also cut off, the internet was being used as a vital way for protestors who supported Opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi to organise activities.

The Security To The Core blog is reporting that game protocols however have gone largely ignored by the goverment manipulation affecting other internet services, and suggests that MMO’s such as World of Warcraft and Second Life could be used by the Iranian people to organise demonstrations against the (possibly) falsely-elected government.

Who says gaming can’t change the world?
